ABB Manual Motor Starters

A manual motor starter combines short-circuit protection, adjustable overload protection and a manual on/off switch in one compact device — the ABB equivalent of a motor protection circuit breaker. MS116 covers small motors, MS132 and MS165 step up in current, and MO versions provide magnetic-only protection for use with a separate overload device.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MS132 and MO132?

MS132 is thermal-magnetic: it protects against both overload and short circuit. MO132 is magnetic-only, giving short-circuit protection alone, and is used where a drive, softstarter or separate overload relay handles thermal protection.

Can a manual motor starter replace an MCB on a motor circuit?

For a motor branch it is usually the better device — its thermal element is matched to motor heating and its magnetic trip tolerates starting inrush, which a general-purpose MCB curve is not designed for.
